Sheets AI bar

With the Chrome extension, every Google Sheet gets an AI bar above the sheet tabs. It works on the range you selected and edits the sheet in place through the same Sheets agent as the chat.

The AI bar above the sheet tabs in Google Sheets

  1. Select the cells you want to work on (or nothing, to work on the whole sheet).
  2. Type a request (“Edit this sheet with GPT Workspace…”, “Add a column that calculates…”, “Highlight the rows where…”) and press Enter, or click a chip.
  3. The bar shows “Thinking…”, “Reading the sheet…”, “Applying changes…”, then Changes applied.

Chips: Clean data, Add totals, Explain selection, and under More: Generate formula, Find duplicates, Add chart, Translate selection to English. Tools lists every prompt and Translate to… with nine languages.

Examples: “Split the full name column into first and last name”, “Add a chart of revenue by month”, “Convert the dates to ISO format”, “Make the header row bold with a grey background”.

The ⋮ menu has Collapse bottom bar, Switch to side panel and Turn off bottom bar. Turn it back on with Show AI bar in Google Sheets in Settings. The bar hides while the sheet is read-only and while Google’s Gemini bar is on screen.

  • Open a Google Spreadsheet to use the bottom bar: the bar only works in the spreadsheet editor.
  • This spreadsheet is open as X, but GPT Workspace is signed in as Y: open it with the same Google account, or share it with the GPT Workspace account.
  • Allow GPT Workspace to edit your Google Sheets in the tab that just opened: accept the permission, then repeat the request.
  • Upgrade your plan in GPT Workspace to keep editing sheets with AI: you are out of credits.

GPT formulas (=GPT() in a cell) are a different feature, see GPT for Google Sheets.
